Over the past few years, the Secondary Mathematics Department has been organizing Mathematics competitions for the lower secondary students. This year, Form 1 and Form 2 students finished their usual competitions on 15th May 2019, while Form 3 students joined a new form of contest on 23rd May 2019.
In Form 1 or Form 2 Maths Competition, students were required to answer a number of questions that apply their knowledge, IQ and logical thinking. Section A questions were answered by two groups of students in each class while those problems in Section B were solved by randomly chosen pairs and the remaining students in class groups. As it was the first time for Form 1 students to experience this kind of competition, most of them showed great enthusiasm and tried very hard to obtain correct answers through group discussion. Form 2 students joined a similar competition last year, so they needed less guidance than Form 1 when answering questions.
Thanks to teachers and student helpers, a new form of Mathematics competition for Form 3 was implemented successfully this year. This new competition is indeed a tailor-made board game developed by the Mathematics Club members. The board game is full of logical puzzles and mathematical problems. In order to win, students working in groups not only need to apply their mathematical knowledge, but also their problem-solving skills, rational thinking and careful observation. This type of competition gives students ample opportunities to hone their communication skills and foster team spirit when cooperating with one another in groups. Many Form 3 students became excited after finding correct answers and had a great time in this contest.
