Greater Bay Area Knowledge Competition & Shenzhen Study Tour

Our Arts and Commerce Stream students from the Senior Secondary Levels recently took part in the School Greater Bay Area Knowledge Competition. The top 30 scoring students from a pool of over 240 participants were invited to an exclusive excursion to Shenzhen sponsored by Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Macau), where they had the opportunity to witness firsthand the remarkable transformation of China's Greater Bay Area.

At the Shenzhen Reform and Opening-up Exhibition Hall, themed "The Great Tide Rises in the Pearl River," students explored the city's incredible journey from a humble fishing village to a global innovation hub over just four decades. Through historical photographs, interactive displays, and reconstructed living quarters of early builders, they gained powerful insights into the economic reforms, entrepreneurial spirit, and forward-thinking policies that fuelled this rapid development.

The exhibition highlighted the remarkable contrast between the modest beginnings of Shenzhen's early builders and the sophisticated modern city that exists today. This juxtaposition illustrated the incredible transformations that have unfolded over a short period, allowing students to appreciate the hard work and determination that went into creating the vibrant Greater Bay Area.

Beyond the historical narrative, many students found personal connection in the stories of struggle and innovation, leaving the exhibition with a renewed sense of commitment to carrying forward the pioneering spirit demonstrated by previous generations.

The group also explored modern landmarks including OCT Harbour and travelled via the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, observing how large-scale infrastructure projects enhance connectivity, reduce transport costs, and stimulate cross-regional trade within the Greater Bay Area. At the OCT Harbour's lively waterfront, students saw how Shenzhen successfully balances economic growth with cultural vibrancy, services, tourism, and environmental care — demonstrating that progress need not come at the cost of quality of life.

The trip provided valuable opportunities to observe how economic reforms, market liberalisation, and innovation policies transformed Shenzhen into a major global economic hub. Students gained understanding of how government planning, foreign investment, and entrepreneurship work together to drive sustainable growth.

The journey deepened students' understanding of how economic theory applies to daily life, while underscoring the importance of infrastructure, innovation, and policy coordination in promoting regional competitiveness and long-term sustainable growth. By observing how strategic investment and effective regional cooperation contribute to balanced development across provinces and cities, students were inspired to envision how our communities might evolve with similar courage, creativity, and foresight. We extend our sincere gratitude to the school for organising this invaluable opportunity, and to Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Macau) for their support.
